Silver Grey Hair Dye
Who said only older people have grey hair? And who said that everyone with grey hair dyes their hair a color to hide the grey? Many people look absolutely elegant and sophisticated after using silver grey hair dye. Some think that silver grey hair will only make one look old but that's not the case. Nowadays grey (or call it gray if you will) is more of a fashion statement than an indication of age, though with celebrities like 40-something Nicole Kidman seen in public with blatantly natural grey roots, it could be a bit of both.
Certainly many natural grey-heads are embracing their hair color (actress Jamie Lee Curtis, Oscar-winning Helen Mirren, the inimitable Vanessa Redgrave, and glamorous Glen Close are just a few examples).
Of course we all go silver/grey eventually, some of us more prematurely than others, and you have to ask yourself what is natural and what is not. Take Kate Moss, the British supermodel and international fashion icon, for example. A natural brunette who is more frequently seen with blonde hair (and often dark roots) was pictured not that long ago with grey roots? The caption to the picture indicated that she was showing "a touch of grey".
It isn't absolutely necessary for brunettes to go completely white before going blonde, although the bleach in some blonde hair dyes will have this effect. Often bleach will leave hair a pale yellow color (orangey if the hair has been previously dyed). It all depends on the final color you are aiming towards. For instance a Kate Moss blonde will be yellowish, whereas platinum blonde is somewhere between this and silver grey. Generally the lighter and whiter you want to go, the more bleached you're going to become.>
If you're planning to dye your hair silver grey, a total bleach job is going to be necessary. There are no half steps here. On the color wheel, true grey is, after all, simply a mix of black and white – and furthermore, both these "colors" are in fact non-colors. For silver grey hair dye to be successful, you need a clean non-color palette to start with.
So what's it likely to look like; and is it for you? Silver grey hair dye has been trendy for some time now, and you can find loads of pictures of people who have taken the plunge.
Some are young and some are older; some have long hair and others have trendy short-cut styles.
If you do a bit of homework, you can certainly find out what the natural color of any celebrity's hair was and compare this to your own natural hair hue.
Here are just a few examples:
- In 2008, American singer-songwriter Pink (then 31) appeared on the scene with short, glossy deep-silver hair. Until then her blonde-dyed pink hair was her trademark. Since then she has frequently tinged the new silver-grey look with a little of her signature pink.
- If you saw the August 2010 edition of the Italian Vogue magazine, you'll have seen how incredible 1990s supermodel, Kristen McMenamy (who was 45 at the time) looked with long silver grey hair literally pouring like a mane over her shoulders.
- A month later, Lady Gaga was emblazoned across the front cover of Vanity Fair, topless it seemed, but with a shock of silver grey hair tumbling over her shoulders, arms and torso; her fingers (with nails painted a matching silver grey) indicating V for victory! That said, it is always difficult to tell whether Lady Gaga is wearing a wig or exposing her own locks to hair dye.
- British model and socialite Pixie Geldof (daughter of former punk rock star Bob Geldof, who himself was quite grey by 2008), is well known for randomly changing the color of her hair. She dyed it shocking silver just as she left her teens in 2009.
- Another celebrity with a penchant for coloring her locks, Ozzy Osbourne's 20-something year-old daughter Kelly has also appeared with silver grey hair.
Almost all major brands have a silver grey hair dye product in the market today and plenty of celebrities prove that silver grey hair has absolutely nothing to do with age.
